No More Pins

The pins in Brenna's arm have started to poke through the splint.  We are so ready to get this active girl into a hard cast.

Voila...hard cast.  Dr. tried to give her a U of U shirt to match her red cast, but she much prefered her BYU blue.  She bleeds blue...her and Cosmo.

Linsday - Soccer Star

Lindsay just started playing Soccer this Spring.  She loves to play at school with her friends, and most of them have been on a team together for several years, so this year they invited her to join them.
It's been great.  A great group of girls and parents and she LOVES it!  She is fast and agressive and amazing ball handling skills for a playground player, but now she's an offical 'Soccer Star'.

Aubrey's Concussion

Ugh.  Aubs suffered a concussion during a Lacrosse game last night.  She came out of the game and was not able to focus or follow the trainers commands.  They thought ot was mild, and she laid down under a blanket for the remainder of the game.  We watched her overnight and the next morning she was worse.  She had no tolerance for light or noise.  Her head was throbbing and we took her into her own doctor.  Concussion - not so mild.  She ran into a wall trying to exit the reception area. She did not know what was going on.  It is scary to see your child not repsond or act like themselves.  She is on 'low brain stimulation' which pretty mcuh means 'strict rest'.  She nows wear sunglasses indoors.  Not fun.

Run 4 Boston

Local runners who had run the Boston Marathon the week before ran in yellow shirts.
Local runners who have never run Boston, but want to support those effected by this tragedy ran in blue shirts.

It was  great night to be our running together!

Hall Visitors

So glad Taloy and Carrie came to visit today.  Brenna is getting sick of being home all day with just Mom, and she and Tay get along well.

Can't beleive he's going to be in K next year.  I remember when he was born, and it doesn't feel like that long ago.

I love this fine lady.  We have been friends since our Aubreyes were babies, and experienced the peaks and valleys of motherhood and life together.  We've got many more ahead of us, I'm sure

Long Night

It was a long night snuggled in a hospital bed together.  The nurses came to check her vitals mutiple time and she got a roommate about 1:00am.  Not our best sleepover, and probably our most expensive.

Brenna, Brinley, and her new favorite red blanket.

PCMC

Headed In

Emergency waiting room, she got a knitted baby hat in her favorite color and met a firend at the tish tank named Oscar.  She told him not to be scared.  I have know this for years, but this girls can and will make friends anywhere.
Gettign her IV.  This was cool for Kay to watch.  She had wanted to do a job shadow of a nurse at a hospital the day before, but you had to be 16, so she job shadowed a Seminary Principal (that was a whole nother adventure) but here the nurses said she coudl watch and asked any questions she had.  Another funny part about the Triage section.  Kayla still had a Fusion bow on from taping the morning show - yes, our day did start at 4:30 am - and one of the  nurses said she saw her team on TV this morning.  Funny.

Now that her surgery wasn't scheduled until the next morning (3 smarties from Mom and Dad) she was able to eat one of her favorite snacks...Mini Wheats.
Waiting to get transferred to her roon for the night.

Here we go...Brinley doll in tow.  Brinley is a hospital doll they give you in the ER.  Brenna got to name her and draw her face on and then they use Brinley to demonstrate everything they will do to Brenna.  It was great for her to see what they would do first.  So Brinley now has a hospital gown on, IV in her right hand and 2 layer splint on her left arm, just like B

Brenna's arm - Urgent Care

I got a call from Emi as I was driving home from Travis' funeral.  She said she thought Brenna broke her arm while at a friends house.  I hurried and picked her up and had Robert meet us at Urgent Care.  As we waited for him, we said a prayer, and both felt very calm.

Once we were in, it was off to X-rays.  Broken in 3 places - needs to be seen by a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon up at Primary Childrens Hospital immediately.

We stopped by home to drop off a car and pick up Kayla.  She had made us a nice dinner, but we had to leave it all and head to the hospital.

Once we got Kayla, Breann asked if she could get a blessing.  These are the times that you know the gospel in planted deep in their hearts.  We made a pit stop at our home teachers house, she recieved a priesthood blessing, and off we went.

Our Friend Travis

Last year we did a morning news show with our friend Travis Hess to promote an upcoming race  supporting the Hess Cancer Foundation.  We have been friends with Travis for about 10 years now, and have always had the utmost repect for him and his family.  Travis endured more than most with 10 cancer battles himself, as well as enduring cancer battles with 3 of his 4 children.  Alexis passed away when she was 4.  Sydney was 12 when she was disgnosed with breat cancer, but is now in remission and in her eraly twenties.  Dallin was only diagnosed about a year or so ago with bone cancer in his lower leg, and soon had that leg amputated  below the knew.  He was 16.  Travis chose to fight  back againsy his cancer through Running and eventually through Triathlons.  He was a sponsored athlete, sponsored by Aquafor, and even while going through chemo and radiation - would hit the pavment.  That is how he dealt with his trials.  When Alexis died, thet had nomoney to pay for her funeral.  An annonymous donor, who still remains annonymous to this day, paid for her funeral.  It changed Travis and he felt a deep need to pass that gift on to other grieveing families.  He started the Hess Cancer Foundation to do just that.  All funds raised go to help families who have lost a child to cancer, pay for their funeral expenses.  He believed in doing good and passing it on. He is a great example and inspiration to our family.  He had great confidence in Kayla and her running ability, and I hope that will inspire her as she continues to run.  Travis will always be a part of our lives and his legacy will live on in the lives of all those he touched.

Travis Philletus Hess
Travis Philletus Hess, age 42, died April 5th 2013 at his home in Lehi, Utah, after numerous battles with cancer spanning twenty years.
Travis was born to D. Gene and Janet Bishop Hess on September 4th, 1970 at the LDS Hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was the third of eight children, 6 boys and 2 girls.
Travis’s family moved from Arco Idaho to Castle Dale, Utah in 1983. Travis graduated from Emery County High School in 1989 lettering in four sports; Football, Wrestling, Weight lifting, and Track. Travis was a very talented artist. Starting at a young age he created countless paintings and carvings, giving them away freely to family and friends. Travis was chosen as the Emery High Sterling Scholar in Visual Arts and won the South Eastern Utah regional completion and was awarded a full paid scholar ship to Snow College.
In August of 1989, Travis received his mission call to serve in the Germany, Hamburg mission. He returned home honorably in September of 1991. Travis loved his mission. He also served in the Utah Army National Guard for seventeen years and attained the rank of Staff Sargent.
In 1991 while attended Snow College Travis met Sherry Quarnberg. They were married in the Manti Temple on March 20th 1992. They had four children and were later divorced.
Travis graduated from Utah State with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and spent his career working as an accountant. During his last battle with cancer the love and support of his co-workers at Pacific Corp was unbelievable. They donated hundreds of hours of personal time and near the very end when Travis couldn’t work they continued to donate time so that Travis did not go without a paycheck.
Travis’s daughter Lexi died of cancer in September of 2000 and Travis was not in a financial position to pay for the funeral expenses. Thankfully, someone was kind enough to anonymously donate a large amount of money for Lexi’s funeral costs. Travis and his family were very touched and inspired by this act of kindness and wanted to figure out how to “pay it forward”.
In 2005 Travis started the Hess Cancer Foundation to provide financial assistance to families that have lost a child to cancer and are not financially prepared for the cost of the funeral. To date, the Hess Cancer Foundation has helped 24 families (hesscancer.org). In an effort to raise money for the Hess Cancer Foundation, Travis began running triathlons and became a sponsored triathlete for team Aquaphor. He completed the Coeur d’alene Ironman in June of 2010. In 2006 Travis went to Washington D.C. representing the American Cancer Society – Utah division – for celebration on the Hill. In 2011 Travis was inducted into the Utah Summer Games Hall of Honor and was the Spirit of the Summer Games.
In the spring of 2009 Travis met Merideth Briles. She would become the love of his life and strengthen him during the difficult times ahead. Travis and Merideth were married in July of 2009 and were sealed in the Salt Lake City temple on March 9th 2012. Just five days later they were blessed with their daughter Madelynne Ray Hess. Merideth and Madelynne were both an enormous blessing to Travis. They gave Travis the strength to face his final battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife Merideth Briles of Lehi Utah, Steve and Holly Briles of Eagle Mountian Utah, his children, Amber (Casey) Nye of Buena Vista Virginia, Sydney, Dallin and Madelynne. His grandmother Betty Harvey, his mother Jan Hess of Bountiful Utah, siblings Darin (Lisa) Hess of Bountiful Utah, Trent Hess of Cedar City Utah, Brandon (Susan) Hess of Hunington Utah, Angie (Martin) Welsh of Henderson Nevada, Brad (Elene) Hess of Liberty Utah and Lisa Mboule of Bountiful Utah and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Alexis Hess, father D. Gene Hess and brother John Hess.
The funeral services will be held on Friday, April 12 at 2:00 pm at the LDS Chapel located at 1998 West 900 North Lehi, Utah. Family and friends may call Friday morning from 12:00-1:45 pm prior to the service.
