Visits to Outstanding Teachers

One of our roles as the JEF Board is to recognize Outstanding Educators.  Back in January, we received a binder full of nominations to read through and evalute based on a specific ruberic.  I spent countless hours reading letters from parents, students, and fellow teachers about amazing teachers who defintely go above and beyond to help their students, schools, and communities.  I can't put into words how inspiring it was, and the graititude and love I felt for these individuals I had never met.

We ended up with 61 Oustanding Educators of the year - 1 from each school in the district; and then narrowed that group down to the Top 19 to be surprised in their classroom and invited to our yearly Gala honoring Outstanding Educators.

As a board, we cleared our schedules for March 19th and planned to get on a yellow school bus, 'Publisher Clearing House Style'  and surprise our Top 19 teachers in their classrooms with balloons and a big check and lots of hoopla. The fancy Gala to recognize them along with a spouse or friend had been finalized - Hotel banquet rooms had been reserved, Dan Rascon & Sandi Resigraf had agrred to MC the night, the menu had been chosen, crystal awards had been ordered....ready to go.

Then Covid-19 hit.  Uuuugh.  No school, no gatherings,  no recognizing teachers. We were sad and not quite sure how to proceed.  It was finally decided and approved by the Superintendent, that the Board would do Home Visits to surprise and recognize all our Outstanding Educators.  It had never been done before, but we were up for the challenge.

Oh my, what a treat!! We took 1 week in April to do home visit suprises for the Top 19.  The principals coordinated with the family and set up Zoom observations with the unknowing teachers so that they would have all their students online with them when the visit took place.  It was a lot of coordinating (hat's off to Steve & Anne for that) but I believe we were able to SURPRISE all 19 of them (as well as their neighbors)

Here's how it happened.  The principal would be on a Zoom while the teacher was teaching, then they would interupt and say that someone else would be joining the Zoom.  Then someone for the board or the Superintendent, would hop on the Zoom call, say Hello to all the students, and invite the teacher to come outsside to their front yard.  We were all outside listening into the Zoom call and once they were invited outside, we went crazy honking horns and making all sorts of noise.  When the teacher came outside....... there were news camera's, balloons, yard signs, friends, other teachers, etc outisde to Congratulate them!  It was awesome!!!!

Here are short clips from few of the visits....

It was such a treat to recognize these teachers and to have their students and family be a part of the celebration, especially during these difficult time.
The social distancing on our part was a little tricky, but we did our best.

The Superintendent then shared a few words, along with their principal, and we awarded them a $1,000.00 check, which they are NOT to use on their classroom and all of the nomination lettters we have recieved about them.  Such a special time to honor those who are doing so much to teach and support our students.  You wish you could honor every single teacher out there for all they are doing.

With the Jeep doors and roof off, Emily was our official DJ for one of the days and played Kool & the Gangs 'Celebration' at each out the house stops.  Brenna also joined me for a few of the visits and it is always fun to have them there!

We scheduled to visit the other 42 teacher in early May....so stay tuned for that.

6 Baby Birds

The eggs resting in the nest on our front door have hatched.  We now have 6 baby birds living on our front door.

Look at the cute face.

Waiting for his Mama to bring him some food

Getting really hungry now.
We are trying to be so careful opening and closing our door in hopes of keeping them feeling safe and secure.  Glad we could provide a 1st home for these little guys.

Work 4 Lindsay

Happy 1st Day of Work for Lindsay!
Kayla made a sign listing some of her favorite qualities about Lindsay.

This summer she is again working for Salt Lake County Mosquito Abatement.
Last year she was on the 'Bike Crew' - riding about 20 miles a day, throwing roughly 300 pesticide packets into storm drains.

This year she has been assigned to the 'Urban Crew' - which means she drives around in a truck placing LIVE FISH into small ponds in private residences aroud the valley.

She misses riding her bike, but likes being able to listen to so many podcasts as she works.
Here are a few of her favorites --- Freakonomics, How I Built This, YReligion, & Planet Money

Trumpet Time

The girls are always opening to learning new skills and developig new talents.  For the most part, they aren't afraid to try new things.  Brenna came up with the idea that she wanted to learn to play the trumpet.  She reached out to the ward, found a trumpet and here we are.

She did not realize this would make her lips swolenn and bleed, but she's still doing it.  She's been using YouTube to learn a few songs and she likes it.  With Robert working in the basement, he did get a few comments on conference calls about what that noise was, so Brenna took her music outisde.  Maybe next year she'll really surprise people by playing the National Anthem at the Talent Show on the trumpet versus singing or on the harmonica.

Basay Zooms

Kayla likes to do Come Follow Me scripture study with families back in Cebu.  There is a 14-hour time difference and not everyone has access to the internet, but she loves when she is able to connect and talk about the gospel with her loved ones there.

Robert's 45th Birthday

Happy 45th Birthday Babe! We celebrated with his favorite cake

a new belt made from Cebu horns

a friendly game of Foot Golf at Mulligan's
Footgolf is a sport, in which players kick a spherical soccer ball into a cup in as few shots as possible.
Our local golf course has a foot golf course right along side their 9 hole golf course.

We had a few sprinkles, but no downpours while we were out on the course

Look at that kicking form

On the green

One teams ball may have gone into a water trap, but Brenna was quick to retrieve it

Fun game of Foot Golf to celebrate Dad's quarantine birthday!

Now onto Questival QuaranTeam!!!!!!!!

Thai Creations

Lindsay loves to cook.  Not having a kitchen to cook in was the only bad thing about living in Helaman Halls her freshman year of college.  Now that she's back, she is always looking for new recipes to try and we've been craving Thai food lately.

Beautiful and delicious Thai dinner

Scavenger Hunt via the Balls

Thank you Balls Family for our Family Scavenger Hunt.  The 1st clue was on our porch and led the girls arpund town collecting and following new clues, and finally ending up back at our house with these treats on our porch.
We sure love the Balls!!!!

Our Little Librarian

I love this picture of Kai going through his box of books.  Parks and library's are probably the 2 places Aubrey and Kai miss the most.  He had been going to Storytime on Tuesdays and to the library to check out books once or twice a week.  He loves his books, and I'm excited for him to get back to the library when it is safe to do so.

Foul Balls on the Road

One of our favorite games to play in the backyard is Marshmellow Baseball.  We set up our plastic bases and use a ping pong paddle and a marmellow as the bat and ball.  This game works for every skill level and for the most part, all of the balls/marshmellows stay in the yard.......except some of the foul balls.
We were all playing marshmellow baseball in the backyard while Kai played in his swing.  I don't know what the deal was, but almost every time Aubrey was upt o bat, she would hit a foul ball over the fence.  The next morning we were out on a run on 98th and found a few of Aubs foul balls/marshmellows smashed in the street.

Nightly Slumber Party's

This is one of the things I will miss when Lindsay leaves on her mission - nightly slumber party's.  These girls stay up talking and laughing until the early hours of the morning and the last eyelid closes.

Disney Sing Along

When the girls heard about the Disney Sing Along, they ALL wanted to watch. Sing along to their favorite Disney songs, they are totally on board for that. I caught a video of them near the end of the show.  I think this was the 'highlight' of the night for them ...... as they ontinuce to be die hard High School Musical Fans.

Kayla's Talk & Testimony

As Kayla was away serving the Lord in the Philippines, we noticed a definite increase in the spirit in our home.  The Lord seemed to tutor us a little more or we were more open to His tutorings.  We wondered if that might change, when she returned home.  Would that special spirit in our home and increased level of spirituality and closeness to God continue? How would Lindsay's prepararations effect our family and desire to grow closer to her and our Savior before she leaves?

What we know now, without a shadow of a doubt, is that missions change lives.  They forever change the lives of the missionary, those they teach, and those they leave behind.  Even after her return home, the Lord continues to be with us, tutor us, and bless our family in innunerable ways. We love the Lord and testify that sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven, and what a fitting topic for Kayla to speak on this beautiful Easter morn.

Easter Sunday

HAPPY EASTER!
We always love the Sabbath Day, but Easter, like Conference, is just one of those extra special Sabbath Days. Having sacrament meeting all together as a family in our home has been such a blesssing these past few weeks,  and was even better having Aubs, Elan & Kai with us today.

At conference last weekend, President Nelson asked us to unite together on Good Friday for a day of Fasting & Prayer to bring relief to the current global pandemic. That fast defintely set the tone for the weekend and brought our hearts closer to the Savior. We recognize the Light and HOPE He brings to the world through His Atomenemt, Crucification, and 3 days later, His triumphant Resurrection.  We know that Christ Lives!  He is our Savior and Redeemer and that through Him, we will ALL live again!

Brenna did our David, Melissa, & the small sparrow flannel board story for us.
It is always an Easter staple in our family.

We talked about all those that we miss who have passed on and the joy that comes knowing we will be able to see them again. We spent time at the cemetery, as we always do, visiting raves and pondering on what the Resurrection means to us indivudally and as a family.

Kai's 1st egg hunt

Found one

More egg finders

Linds found some eggs

Some eggs had spiritual thoughts, some had money, and some had candy.
The last egg found was Aubrey's golden egg.  It took a few prayers, but it was found.

Everyone was HAPPY!
Love this crew of ours!

Kay's 1st Interview

Once I got home and realized I would be here to stay I started looking into job opportunities. Aubrey and Elan had actually met while working as BYU Sports Camp Counseolors where they watched the campers and became their freinds. I also really wanted to be a part of BYU Sports Camps and applied online and had an online interview as well. They asked me what would make me stand out from others and the first thing I could thing of was that I play the harmonica. I am defintiely not too good at using english and expressing myself in english because it's still so Bisaya but it went well and I was told they would get back to me. A couple of days later we saw on the news that the Camps are also getting cancelled this summer which means I won't be able to work there but maybe next summer! -Kayla

Night Games

Night has now become our favorite time of the day.  Robert is done with work, the girls are done with school work, and we have no other obligations at this time, so we gather in the backyard for games.
Volleyball (with no net) is a staple because Linday is currently enrolled in an Intermediate Volleyball class at BYU and has to play for so many hours.  And no, we are not at an Intermediate level!

Lots of Lacrosse playing for the girls.  Passing, stick work, drills, and shooting

Spikeball, which gets moved to the basement shen it's too cold outside.
I don't take my phone out much, so we don't get many pictures, but this is one of those times we are grateful for a big back yard, grateful for a pool, and grateful for awesome sisters to play with!

Nightly Walks

Quick pit stop on our nightly walk with Jett. The girls thought is was 'godlen hour' so we need a pic with the good lighting.  Nightly walk and backyard games have become part of our new routine.
